OPF Document Hack Week October 2019
14th Oct 2019 - 18th Oct 2019
We are excited to announce that our next hack week will take place on 14-18 October! We’re joining in with Hacktoberfest to celebrate and encourage meaningful contributions to open source software.
This hack week will focus on documentation. We are looking for volunteers to help update resources to support users with our open source reference toolset for digital preservation.
Our key tasks include:
- Translations of JHOVE error messages
- Improving JHOVE module information
- Documenting feature extraction and configuration in veraPDF
We have created two milestones with the tasks below, but welcome suggestions from the community too!
The GitHub issues in these milestones are labelled with ‘hacktoberfest’. You can also find other issues on our repos with this label as Hacktoberfest runs for the whole month.
Taking part in the hack week is an opportunity to collaborate with the community to improve open source tool documentation for everyone. We welcome both experienced users and beginners.
How does it work?
We are running this online event for a week to enable contributors can give as much or as little time as they wish. We will hold six check-in calls (Monday, Wednesday and Friday twice a day), but we will be available throughout the week to answer questions and provide assistance.
Monday 14 October
13:00 CEST Europe
18:00 CEST Rest of world
Wednesday 16 October

Friday 18 October

At the calls, we will talk through each task and encourage people to pair up or work in small groups. For example, to create user documentation for veraPDF, we are happy to walk you through the feature exaction configuration. We can also provide help with creating profiles using schematron for the policy engine. To join the calls, simply register below and we will send you the details.
Registration and code of conduct
Please register if you would like to take part to help us plan the event. We will email you all the information you need, including the timetable, links for the check-in calls and contact details. If you sign up and then cannot take part during the week – no problem! Take a look at our frequently asked questions to find out more or contact us if you have any questions. Please read the Hacktober Code of Conduct before attending. Happy Hacking!
Hacktoberfest and OPF goodies
All participants will be sent some OPF goodies. If you’d like to be in with a chance to receive a Hacktoberfest t-shirt, you must register on the Hacktoberfest site – in addition to OPF registration – and then make four pull requests (PRs) between 1-31 October. Find out more.
About Hacktoberfest
Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean in partnership with DEV — is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors toward issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like and others they’ve just discovered. No contribution is too small — bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.
